Summertime is here, and with it comes a checklist of making sure the outside of your home is looking just as amazing as the inside.

The flowers are planted, the house has been power washed, and you even remembered to paint those faded old shutters! Now, what about the driveway? Is it still in tip-top shape, or is it starting to show its age?

On average, a driveway should be resealed every 2-3 years, but what if there was something that could prolong the life of your driveway while also making you the envy of the neighborhood? Read on to find out the benefits of applying a polyurea coating to your cement driveway, that is sure to give your curb appeal a boost!

What is Polyurea?

Polyurea is a compound similar to that of Polyurethane that was developed in the 1980s for the car industry. It is a hard coating that provides lasting protection against scratches, stains, and everyday wear and tear.

It’s no wonder that polyurea was first used to mold things like front and rear bumpers, fenders, doors, and more. In 1989 the first commercially used polyurea spray was developed and used by Texaco.

Unlike epoxy, polyurea is a quick-drying, rapid-curing coating that provides long-lasting protection on a variety of surfaces, and works well as a driveway sealer on concrete surfaces.

Just Say No to Epoxy

There are many types of driveway materials that are found all over, from asphalt to rocks, from porcelain to epoxy. Now, epoxy is great on a lot of things. It is used on countertops, fiberglass repairs, and even used in crafts, but one thing epoxy should not be used for is a driveway coating.

Epoxy can take several days to cure, which means you will have to find somewhere else to keep the cars until then. Epoxy also has a narrower window for what temperature it cures in, between 50-70 degrees is ideal, while polyurea cures quickly and can be done any time of the year.

As with asphalt and concrete, epoxy will need to be re-applied every few years, and you will start to notice the wear and tear, especially in high traffic areas.

It is for all these reasons that polyurea is better than epoxy.

Benefits of a Polyurea Driveway Coating

We have already gone over a few of the reasons why polyurea  should be your next choice for your concrete driveway sealer, but here are a few more in case you are still a skeptic.

If you have not had your driveway sealed in a while, you probably have a variety of automotive stains around. But with a polyurea driveway coating, you can be sure that your driveway will be resistant to stains, scratches, and other forms of corrosion.

One of the biggest reasons for cracked driveways is due to the sun’s powerful UV rays. The sun will crack a driveway just as it does your skin if you have nothing on for protection, and you don’t want your driveway looking like a leathery old man now do you?

In addition, a polyurea coated concrete driveway coating will outlast any other driveway for years to come.

How about DIY?

There are a plethora of videos out there that show you how to seal a cement driveway, but it’s not easy and can be very messy if you don’t know what you are doing.

No one is doubting your DIY skills, but do you really want to spend the summer working on your driveway when you could be living it up at the beach?
